When searching for a holiday cottage in France, you will undoubtedly have come across the word ‘gîte’ more than once. The term is common in France, yet only seasoned French travellers may know what it actually represents.
So, what is a gîte?
A gîte is a holiday cottage. In addition, traditionally-speaking, it is quite a specific type of holiday cottage – one that is furnished and ready for a self-catering holiday. Another specific requirement of the gîte is that the owner lives nearby – usually in close enough proximity to provide a welcome party and assistance if required.
Most commonly, gîtes in France are housed in outbuildings located on the land of the owner, often in renovated barns, stables and animal sheds.
There are different types of gîte classifications:
Gîtes d’Enfants – Not to be confused with a standard holiday cottage, Gîtes d’Enfants provide accommodation for children during school breaks, often with a range of activities to suit all ages.
Gîtes d’Etape – Usually located in fairly remote areas, Gîtes d’Etape cater for groups of walkers or cyclists, and often for short, stopover periods.
Gîtes Rural – These types of holiday cottages in France are the most common for holidaymakers. They are self-contained units located in outbuildings on the owner’s property. Gîtes Rural, as the name suggests, are often situated in the countryside or by the sea.
Gîte Equestre – These types of accommodation offer stabling for horses, and provide facilities for people travelling across France on horseback. A French version of a wild west staging post.
